"Veneers" is a menu, not a single item

Plenty of people walk in thinking of veneers as one fixed thing, when really it is a small menu of options that suit different faces, budgets and goals. Before you commit to anything, it pays to see the choices side by side, and that is exactly how we like to begin with Sutton patients, since the right answer for your neighbour may be the wrong one for you.

There are two questions worth settling early: which material, and how many. Get those two right and the rest of the decision tends to fall into place.

Material: porcelain or composite

Porcelain veneers are custom-made in a lab and bonded to the front of the tooth. They give the most lifelike, light-catching finish, resist staining well and last the longest, comfortably years with sensible care. They usually need a thin layer of enamel shaped first and are the larger investment, from an indicative £995 per tooth.

Composite veneers are sculpted directly onto the tooth in a single visit using tooth-coloured resin. They are gentler on the tooth, often needing little or no enamel removed, and cost less up front, though they do not last as long as porcelain and can pick up stains over time.

Neither is the "better" one in the abstract. Porcelain wins on longevity and finish, composite wins on cost, speed and reversibility, and the right call depends entirely on what you value most.

How many: a few or a fuller set

The second question is scale. Some people only want one or two veneers to settle a chipped or out-of-line tooth, while others want a fuller set for an even, balanced smile. More is not automatically better, and we will happily tell you if a smaller, simpler plan gives you the result you are picturing for less money and less intervention.

How we help you choose

For most Sutton patients the choice settles once three things are on the table: the problem you want fixed, the number of years you expect the result to last, and the budget you are comfortable with. Porcelain tends to suit people who want the longest-lasting, most natural finish and see it as a long-term investment. Composite suits people who want a faster, lighter-touch change they could revisit later. We map those options against your own priorities at the free consultation, and we will say so if the simpler plan is the better one.

Payment need not decide it either, because 0% finance through Tabeo spreads the cost into monthly amounts.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do porcelain and composite veneers actually differ?

Porcelain shells are made in a lab and bonded on, lasting longer and resisting stains better, whereas composite is sculpted onto the tooth in one visit, costs less and has a shorter lifespan.

  • Will I need a whole set, or only one or two?

It depends on what you want to change, and plenty of Sutton patients only need a couple of veneers, so we always start from the smallest plan that gets you there.

  • Is composite the cheaper choice in the long run?

Composite is cheaper on day one, but porcelain's longer life means the cost per year can end up closer than you might think.

  • Could I reverse composite veneers later?

Usually yes, since composite is conservative and needs little or no enamel taken away.

  • What happens at the consultation?

We look at your teeth, listen to what you want, and set porcelain and composite side by side against your goals and budget, without steering you to the most expensive option.
