Working out which treatment is right for you

People in Old Coulsdon often arrive with the same quiet question: is bonding the thing I want, or should I be looking at veneers or whitening instead? It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on what is bothering you about your teeth.

So rather than push one option, this page lays the choices side by side so you can think it through before you ever sit in a chair. If you do fancy talking it over in person, we are a short drive north from the village green, down through Coulsdon and on to Foxley Lane in Purley, with free parking when you get here.

We would always rather you picked the treatment that fits than the one with the biggest price tag.

The three options, plainly compared

Bonding adds tooth-coloured resin to your existing teeth and shapes it by hand. It is brilliant for chips, small gaps, worn edges and reshaping, needs little or no drilling, is largely reversible and starts from an indicative £250 per tooth. It is usually the quickest route to a noticeable change.

Veneers are thin shells bonded to the front of the tooth. They tend to suit bigger, longer-term transformations, but they usually mean removing a little enamel, cost more, and are a more permanent commitment. For smaller fixes they can be more than the job needs.

Whitening changes colour but not shape. If your teeth are well-formed and healthy but a shade duller than you would like, whitening on its own may do everything you want. If shape is part of the problem, whitening will not touch it.

A simple way to think about it

If your concern is shape, chips or gaps, bonding is usually the natural first port of call. If it is purely colour, start with whitening. Some people do both: whiten first, then bond to match the brighter shade. And if you are after a sweeping, long-haul change across the whole smile, that is the conversation where veneers earn their place.

What bonding is like on the day

Bonding is comfortable and almost always needs no injection, because there is no drilling into the tooth. We prepare the surface, apply the resin in layers, sculpt it to shape, set each layer with a curing light, then polish it to a natural finish and check your bite. Most smiles come together over two to three visits.

You stay with one dentist throughout, which keeps everything consistent. Your care is led by dentists including Dr Nev Jeyakumar, Dr Christine Marzahn and Dr Andy, and the first appointment is a free, no-pressure consultation where we help you weigh it all up.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is bonding or veneers better for me?

Bonding suits chips, gaps and reshaping with little tooth removal, while veneers are aimed at bigger, more permanent cosmetic changes.

  • Could whitening alone be enough?

If your teeth are a good shape but a little dull, whitening on its own may give you exactly what you are after.

  • Can I have whitening and bonding together?

Yes, many people whiten first and then have the bonding shaded to match the lighter result.

  • Which option keeps the most of my natural tooth?

Bonding does, because it adds material rather than removing enamel, which also makes it largely reversible.

  • How do I know what to choose?

Come in for a free consultation and we will look at your teeth and recommend the option that genuinely fits, not the dearest one.
